Arcor N, Arcor V, Salt Bath Nitrocarburizing

Arcor® N is distinctive in that it is an austenitic, rather than ferritic,
nitrocarburizing process. It was developed to streamline, simplify and
lower the costs of nitrocarburizing in molten salt.

Arcor N processing begins with the use of an ionic liquid media,
followed by rinsing, an oxidizing bath to enhance corrosion performance,
and polymer impregnation, which seals the superficial voids in the
iron oxinitride.

Arcor N treatment produces a duplex surface layer of epsilon iron nitride of
10-25 microns.  Beneath the surface layer is a deep zone of nitrogen diffusion
whose primary contribution is fatigue strength and resilience.  The hard,
yet ductile surface layers make Arcor-treated parts compatible with mating
surface without surface cracking or exfoliation.

Arcor N delivers high nitriding potential, and considerable hardness
during its short process cycle.
Its ductile compound layer provides
outstanding resistance to wear and corrosion.  When used with its
Corolac post-treatment bath, Arcor N corrosion performance is up to
1000 hours, per ASTM B117.  Parts treated withArcor effectively
resist seizure. The microlayer inhibits the forming of a frictional
welding point and assists the running-in of components.
Under hydrodynamic conditions, Arcor N can considerably reduce
the initial instability threshold of the viscous film, and the instability
threshold of oil film breakdown.

Finally, the ARCOR process produces substantial improvements
in fatigue resistance.

In thousands of applications on four continents, Arcor has proved
its ability to improve layer quality – particularly for cast irons –
shorten cycle times, and reduce total costs..

Arcor is a very cost-effective liquid nitriding method and
can often replace a two-part treatment (heat treating + surface finishing)
with a single treatment – at a significantly lower cost.

Arcor® V was engineered specifically for austenitic stainless steel
engine valves.  This application provides two valuable benefits:
a shorter process cycle and highly uniform, repeatable results.
