What are PVD Coatings?

PVD/DLC Coating Pricing

  1. How are PVD/DLC Coatings priced?

PVD/DLC Coatings are generally piece priced, with a required minimum delivery quantity. To ensure that the coating is consistent from part to part, it is important to load a full batch of precision component parts in very batch. If a full batch of parts are not available, the shortfall is usually made up with dummy parts to ensure a full-load. So, it is common for PVD/DLC coating companies to specify a minimum dollar/batch, along with the unit price.

  2. What factors determine the price of PVD/DLC Coatings?
    with PVD?

The main factors that influence the price of PVD/DLC Coatings are:

    • Annual units and delivery quantities
    • Units per batch. This, in turn, is dependent upon (a) size and geometry of the component; (b) coating thickness and its uniformity requirements; (c) masking requirements; and (d) the size of the coating chamber.
    • Degree of automation in handling parts.
    • Pre & Post-coat surface finish requirements.
    • Batch processing time. This, in turn, depends upon (a) coating deposition rate, which is a function of the coating type; the coating structure; and any component temperature restrictions – lower deposition temperatures usually imply longer processing times and (b) coating thickness requirements.

In general, PVD/DLC coatings can be around 2-3 times more expensive than conventional platings or nitriding treatments - but deliver substantially higher value when it comes to wear and friction reduction.
